The esteemed “Order of the Golden Kite” presented by Emperor Meiji
Description                           Estimate: $4,000+

DS in Japanese, one page, 23.25 x 17.75, circa 1890–1912. Untranslated document in which the emperor of Japan confers the Order of the Golden Kite upon a distinguished member of the military. Includes the award medal with its black lacquered presentation case, as well as the document’s wooden box and black lacquered case. Tightly rolled and in fine condition. Also accompanied by a document for the Order of the Rising Sun, not signed by the emperor.

Established in 1890 by Emperor Meiji, the Order of the Golden Kite was a military award commemorating the mythic Jimmu Tenno, the ‘Romulus of Japan.’ It was awarded to soldiers and military officers who demonstrated bravery, leadership, or command in battle. This is one of the few orders made exclusively for the Japanese military, while most others could be given to civilians, diplomats, and other officials including those from other countries. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
